Taking advantage of the cooler weather during December, January and February, each year the BSO presents a series of Sunday concerts in Lumpini Park, the heart of Bangkok. A ‘gift’ to the people of Bangkok, the concerts are free, thanks to sponsorship from Boon Rawd Brewery and the co-operation of the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority. In the cool of the late afternoon, the wide-ranging repertoire encompassing western classics, Thai classical music and popular music from Broadway and the movies is enjoyed by audiences of 2,000 and more. Over almost 20 years, these concerts have introduced tens of thousands of Thais of all ages to the BSO and the glories of orchestral music.

Elephant Nature Park - A Must Visit

Elephant Nature Park is a unique project set in Northern Thailand. Established in the 1990, with the aim to provide a sanctuary and rescue centre for elephants. The park is set in Chiang Mai province, some 60km from the city, set in a natural valley, bordered by a river, and surrounded by forested mountains the area offers a timeless glimpse of rural life.

Elephant Nature Park has rescued over 30 distressed elephants throughout the country and has received numerous awards from institutions including the Smithsonian. The founder, Sangduen Chailer, was named Asian Hero of the Year by Time magazine in 2005 and the park has been featured in many international publications including National Geographic magazine as well as feature documentaries from numerous film production companies including Animal Planet, BBC, National Geographic, CNN and many others.

New York, July 16, 2009 — Two cities in Thailand, Bangkok and Chiang Mai, were voted among the top 10 cities in the world, according to Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards, the results of which were published in the August 2009 issue of the magazine.

Travel + Leisure readers selected Bangkok and Chiang Mai as the third and fifth best cities in the world, respectively — as well as second and third best cities in Asia. The Thai islands of Phuket and Ko Samui were awarded the third and fifth best islands in Asia.

The tranquil riverside enclave surrounding the Kalayanamitr Temple is an old community whose history can be traced back more than two centuries when King Taksin the Great, after his victory over the Burmese, arrived in Thon Buri in 1767 and made it his new capital.

This is one of my favourite place in Thonburi area. A must visit ^_^

Sivalai Place's day out with Thammasat Exchange students & Benz, our friendly staff ^^ We went on a little expedition around local area: how to get to TU from Sivalai Place, Supermarket trip & where to buy the uniform.

TU Dress Code:

If you already have the shirt, pants, skirts & shoes, bring them along. I recommend to bring the comfortable shoes since it might be difficult to find the large size here. You can also buy the uniform at Thammasat University or around the market near the pier.

As traditions, we are running a Sivalai Place: BKK survival orientation for our TU Fall - residents around the 1st week of August. We will also include the Uniform Hunting expedition on the orientation. ^^ See you then guys!

Bts Sky Train Route To Thonburi Now In Operation

Wong Wien Yai station is about 15-20 mins drive from Sivalai Place. It is about 60BHT by taxi and 8BHT by bus.

Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS), the operator of Bangkok's SkyTrain — a rail based mass transit system, has launched the new 2.2-kilometre extension linking the Saphan Taksin Bridge Station to Krung Thonburi Station and Wong Wian Yai Station on the Thonburi side of Bangkok.

This new service links Sathorn Road, one of Bangkok’s prime business districts, to Thonburi on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River. The extension is the first of its kind across the Chao Phraya River and provides commuters with a welcome alternative to having to drive bumper-to-bumper across the bridge during the rush hour.

The service to and from Krung Thonburi Station and Wong Wian Yai Station operates from 6 am till midnight daily. The Wong Wian Yai station is the last station on the Silom Line. During this initial three-month period, passengers will be able to travel on the new extension of the BTS free-of-charge from now through to August 12, 2009. Fare collection will start on August 13.

Get ready to wilt on the year's hottest day

April 27 is expected to be the hottest day of the year, according to the Meteorological Department. On that day, the sun will be directly above Thailand, causing the temperature to increase, said Somchai Baimuang, director of the weather bureau.

However, the sweltering heat could be tempered somewhat because of a high pressure belt from April 24 to 27, which should bring rain.

After that, Thailand will wilt under high temperatures again before the rainy season kicks in, Mr Somchai said.

He said the average temperature across the country this month was below 40C, or two to three degrees below projections as a result of intermittent rain.

Thailand's hottest day was recorded on April 25, 2007, when the temperature hit 44C in Tak province.

Bangkok City Hall is preparing to sign a contract with the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) to extend its skytrain service from the Taksin Bridge station to the Taksin junction, due to officially open in August.

Bangkok deputy governor Teerachon Manomaiphibul, who oversees the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's (BMA) skytrain project, said negotiations would be held with the BTS about fares and operating fees for three years for the extended 2km route. The junction is located close to the King Taksin Monument, or Wong Wian Yai.
The service on the extended route is expected to be officially opened on Aug 12 to mark Her Majesty the Queen's birthday.

Before its official opening, there will be a test run lasting three months, starting from May 15.

The situation in Bangkok has returned to normal. Residents and visitors to Thailand are enjoying the Songkran Thai New Year celebrations throughout the Thai kingdom, including in Bangkok.

The Thai Government has also declared April 16 and 17 (Thursday and Friday) public holidays, thereby extending the Songkran festive holiday.

On 14 April, the leaders of the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) called off their anti-government protests. By mid-afternoon, all of the protestors had dispersed.
Shopping malls in Bangkok re-opened as of 13.00 hrs on 14 April and have continued to operate on a normal schedule since.
Hotels throughout the country are operating as normal.
The BTS SkyTrain, subway services, public utilities and communication services continue to operate uninterrupted.
All roads in Bangkok are now open to traffic. Bus services on all routes and the train service to/from Bangkok have resumed.
All other travel-related infrastructure and services, including all airports, train services throughout the country, and roadways are operating as normal and all other parts of Thailand are safe for travel and tourists can still visit other destinations and attractions.
The Kingdom’s various tourist attractions and shopping districts are open for business as usual and tourists and visitors can continue to enjoy the variety of sites, food and experiences. For information, please call the TAT Call Center: 1672.
Under the emergency decree, the prohibition of public gatherings of more than five people in Bangkok is limited to political activities and acts which may lead to unrest.
The measure does not in any way apply to Songkran celebrations and festivities, the organization of local and international corporate meetings, incentive events, conventions, and exhibitions, or MICE. It is 'business-as-usual' for all MICE events hosted in Thailand.
The Emergency Decree is only a temporary measure. Representatives from Thailand’s travel and tourism-related trade associations are scheduled to meet with the Thai government on 17 April to discuss the lifting of the Emergency Decree at the earliest possible time.

Note:
Following the safe departure of the ASEAN leaders on 11 April (Saturday), the state of emergency for Pattaya and Chon Buri province was lifted soon after 19.00 hrs. on the same day.

Songkran embodies traditional Thai cultures values. The underlying significance of Songkran is the process of cleansing and purification starting the New Year afresh with all that is good and pure.

Songkran is a Thai traditional New Year which starts on April 13 every year and lasts for 3 days. Songkran festival on April 13 is Maha Songkran Day or the day to mark the end of the old year, April 14 is Wan Nao which is the day after and April 15 is Wan Thaloeng Sok which the New Year begins. At this time, people from the rural areas who are working in the city usually return home to celebrate the festival. Thus, when the time come, Bangkok temporarily turns into a deserted city.

Songkran is a Thai word which means "move" or "change place" as it is the day when the sun changes its position in the zodiac. It is also known as the "Water Festival" as people believe that water will wash away bad luck.

The Songkran tradition is recognized as a valuable custom for the Thai community, society and religions. The value for family is to provide the opportunity for family members to gather in order to express their respects to the elders by pouring scented water onto the hands of their parents and grandparents and to present them gifts including making merits to dedicate the result to their ancestors. The elders in return wish the youngsters good luck and prosperity.

The values for community is to provide the opportunity to create unity in the community such as to jointly acquire merits, to meet each other and to enjoy the entertaining events. And for the society value is to create concern upon environment with cooperation such as to clean houses, temples, public places and official buildings. Thais value the religion bye means of merits acquisition, offerings alms to monks, Dhamma Practice, listening to sermon and monks-bathing.

There are more than just fireflies, peacefulness, a floating market and kafae boraan (traditional coffee) on offer at Amphawa. Long before Samut Songkram found its way onto the tourist map, the small river town has been home to historical sites. The Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre will hold a day-trip to historical sites in Amphawa on April 6.

Led by history expert Pridi Pitphumwithi, the tour will set off at the centre in Bangkok at 7:54am, and will visit Wat Amphawan Jitiyaram where the mural paintings feature the royal missions of King Rama II. Learn more about King Rama V's travels through Europe in the Wat Pradu Museum. The route will also cover King Rama II Park, Bang Kung Fort and Wat Phummarin Kudee Thong.

Although the trip doesn't take in the more popular tourist attractions such as the floating market, you will have a chance to visit the lychee orchard, one of the most famous producers in the area.

According to the Cabinet Resolution dated 20 January 2009, all foreigners who apply for Tourist Visa at the Royal Thai Embassies, the Royal Thai Consulates-General and The Honorary Consulates worldwide, including eligible foreigners who apply for Visa on Arrival at designated checkpoints, will be exempted from Tourist Visa fee from 5 March to 4 June B.E. 2552 (2009). Such arrangement is for Tourist Visa only.

For travelers entering Thailand not for tourism purpose are required to obtain appropriate visa and pay for visa fee as usual.

Passport holders from 42 countries and countries which have concluded agreements on the exemption of visa requirements (for tourist visa exemption) with Thailand are still permitted to enter Thailand without visa requirements.

Umbrella Etiquette

1.    Use the Right Umbrella: umbrella that is appropriate for your use and proportionate to your body size. There is no rule saying you can’t own more than one umbrella: a small one for your use alone and a larger version when you are walking together with another person.

2.    Avoid Umbrella Rage: Be sensitive to how the metal or plastic points sticking out at every fold may poke someone in the body or, worse, in the eye. Rain or shine, utilize just half the width of the sidewalk when walking in a group, so others can easily pass by.

3.    Learn the Dance of Umbrellas: For a taller person, when you encounter another person using an umbrella, raise your umbrella up so a shorter person may pass by without colliding with your umbrella. Likewise, if you are a shorter person, lower your umbrella closer to your head.

4.    Keep It Closed and Dry Inside: It is customary to close your umbrella before entering a building. Remove any excess water by gently taping the tip of the umbrella in front of the building a couple of times. Make use of the carrying case that came with your umbrella, or the disposable plastic bags that many office buildings and stores provide, to cover your wet umbrella while indoors.

5.    Park Umbrellas with Care: Be mindful of where you place your umbrella. If no umbrella stand is provided, set your umbrella upright with the tip on the floor beside you. In trains, planes, and automobiles, lay it on the floor near your feet, not on an empty seat where other people may sit on it or the puddle it leaves behind. Keep your umbrella away from walkways where someone might trip over it.

6.    Carry Cautiously: It continues to amaze me how oblivious people are about the physical space they occupy. When not in use, always hold your umbrella vertically, with the pointed end down. Do not tuck it under your arm horizontally with the ends sticking out ready to stab someone.

7.    Look Both Ways Before You Open: Be mindful of who may be standing nearby when opening your umbrella. Open it with care, noticing whether your umbrella will poke someone.

8.    Just Enjoy Windy Days: When the wind is so strong that your umbrella is in jeopardy of being turned inside out, simply forget it. Tilting your umbrella into the wind only obstructs your forward vision and, more times than not, doesn’t help much, anyway. Rather, brave the elements in a good rain coat with a hood.

The Asian Elephant Foundation of Thailand

       A hundred years ago there were as many as 100,000 elephants in Thailand but a decline in population has taken place at a shocking rate, leaving only about 5,000 elephants whose futures are in doubt.

   From its founding in 1990 to the present, the Asian Elephant Foundation of Thailand has been compiling data on elephants in order to give direction to solving problems by creation the following projects : registering elephants in general database and creation an adopt-an-elephant programme. Through this programme, the Asian Elephant Foundation co-ordinates the health care of 145 elephants. Despite such efforts, however, there are thousands more elephants who aren't receiving attention. Furthermore, the welfare from this fund only addresses the problems of health care. As for proper nutrition, accident prevention, employment (like humans, tame elephants need to be productively occupied for good mental health) and encroachment of habitat (in the case of wild elephants), such problems remain to be addressed.

   In addition there is the continued administration of the foundation which the workers and funds. Indeed, Thai elephants will not be out of danger until people recognize the need to help them co-exist with humans. Therefore the Asian Elephant Foundation of Thailand would like to invite everyone to contribute to this work before elephants become extinct in Thailand. Anyone can help whether it is by informing us about elephants in trouble or by boycotting trades which endanger elephants. Contributions may be made in the form of money, equipment of time.

If you're tired of bad economic and political news, leave your worries behind and take a trip during the New Year to refresh yourself before starting 2009. This time, though, the trip should be simple and affordable at only 1,000 baht a day to suit the present belt-tightening situation.

The Amphawa canal plays a key role in the livelihood of the community in Samut Songkhram, a popular haunt of stressed-out city folk.

Pack your favourite Hawaiian shirt and James Patterson novel and book accommodation in a province near Bangkok. After recharging your batteries, you'll be ready to work again, even with the uncertain prospect of a salary cut or layoff.

A 1,000-baht-a-day trip makes a good choice in the current context with a shift from luxury travel to affordable trips. Put that overseas visit on hold for a while because Thailand needs Thais to travel within the country and distribute income to local people. Experience simple folk traditions and you may find a new solution to problems and discover what life really means.

Watcharachai Sitraparkulsiri, a senior programmer with a private company, took the advice to heart recently. He ventured out with his friends to Amphawa District in Samut Songkhram, with a budget of 1,000 baht per day per head, including accommodation. The trip taught them about happiness from the simplicity that they had ignored for a long time.

"The 1,000-baht-a-day trip was very challenging for us. Discipline was crucial to manage the limited budget. Although we faced some difficult times during the trip, we believed that we would get good things as well. And the experience became a cherished memory for us," said Mr Watcharachai.

Four males and one female with 2,000 baht in pocket money and no credit or ATM cards started a journey at The Mall Bang Khae. They thumbed a lift and within 15 minutes found a kind driver who took them to Amphawa.

Dine to your heart’s content on food cooked fresh from the boat.

When they reached Amphawa, they booked one night's accommodation with a friendly homestay at Roen Sabai, located along the Amphawa canal and only 150 metres from an evening market.

A pink homestay room was 700 baht for two people per room per night, combined with breakfast. A 900-baht package including trips to see fireflies and the local lifestyle, morning alms offering, a night market tour, a cycling trip, temple visits and meals was also on offer.

Mr Watcharachai recalled that while they were reading novels and relaxing on a balcony by the canal in the evening, smiling paddling vendors kept passing by and offering their products. Among them was a man in his seventies who came with his small grandson to sell pomelo and other fruits.

"We asked for a kilo of mangoes. He gave us an extra amount of jackfruit and papaya. We were very happy. This kind of thing is rarely seen in the city," he said.

Surely, Mr Watcharachai asked the paddling vendor, how can he make any profit by giving away so much? The vendor said with a smile that he just wanted to give fruit to younger people who were fellow Thais. Despite making no profit, he was fine because he still had enough to eat. All these fruits were from his orchards.

"Giving satisfies me and it means people will come back here again. Visiting and shopping here will enable local people to make a living. If visitors find our products excellent, we will benefit from word of mouth," he said.

Mr Watcharachai said it was a simple answer but very sincere.

Fruit at provincial markets is far cheaper than in the city, and free samples are the norm.

"If people shared the same ideology with this old uncle, society would not suffer from the present political conflicts. This man who loves to give should prompt us to ask ourselves what we have done for society. Small social contributions from all of us will be enough. We need not plan any big contribution," he said.

The group spent 150 baht each for dinner at the market then went fishing and reminisced about when they were young.

"We hadn't hung out like that for a long, long time. At that time, I felt happy as if I had nothing to worry about tomorrow. We went to bed late at night and really had a good sleep," he said.

In the morning, they gave food offerings to a monk with 60 baht. Total spending for each person was 915 baht - 350 baht for accommodation, 150 for dinner, 60 for a boat ride, 105 for bus and minibus fares, and 250 baht for souvenirs and other expenses. They still had 85 baht to buy a garland to pay respect to Lord Buddha and happiness in their pockets.

A tour agent is a convenient choice for people too busy to create a trip. For example, Tour Sooksun offers three packages including Wai Pha 9 Wat in Nakhon Pathom, Ayutthaya and Samut Songkhram (Amphawa). The packages are quite popular and suitable for everybody amid a recession and local strife.

The one-day-trip price is only 999 baht. The packages include paying respect to Lord Buddha at nine temples, lunches, shopping, bus fares and learning history and traditions.

OUR POLICY - short term stay

1. Linens & Towels will be provided upon your arrival. Additional change is available with an additional charge.

2. The apartments are completely cleaned prior to your arrival. Additional cleaning is available on request for an additional charge depends on the apartment room types.

3. High speed LAN Internet is available on request with additional charge as follows: Daily fee: 30 BHT or monthly fee of 900BHT with no modem deposits required.

4. Smoking is not permit inside the apartments. However, smoking is allowed outside the building in the open areas.

5. The Ozone Swimming Pool and Fitness Center are made available to Sivalai Place's Residents at no additional charge as complimentary.

6. Min.stay is 3 nights. Additional charges of 300bht/night will apply on top of the actual reserved nightly rate if the online booking is less than 3 nights stay.

7. Any unexpected guests increase in the number of guests over the number originally reserved the apartment for will be automatically charged the full occupancy of 500BHT per guest per night during the entire stay.

8. Check-in is from 12.00hr and Check-out is at 11.00hr. For a guaranteed late check-out; clients should book for an additional night, charged at 100%. All stays are calculated and sold 'per night'. Late check-outs can be requested at the moment of reservation in the additional comments box, but may come at an additional fee (usually 50% of the nightly rate).

9. The Office hours are from 8.30hr to 18.00hr, Mon throughout Sun.

10. Policies on late check-in after the office hours:
Even though we are not a full-serviced apartment with 24hr front desk; but if you find yourself running early or late and will not arrive at that time, please kindly let us know as soon as possible.

Our Security Guard who knows the properties very well and can coordinate your arrival; will show you to your reserved apartment unit; after the verification process as follows:

a) The Security Guard will ask to see the reservation/confirmation document & the passport to crosscheck name and the reference number.
b) Guests must fill-in the provided Guest registration form.
c) The Security Guard then will show you to your reserved apartment unit.

Regarding the payment upon arrival for late check-in, we would prefer for our Residents and Guests to make the payment at the Main Office on the following morning from 8.30hr onward. There is no additional charge for late check-in.

We also suggest that you make a pre-order meal which is at the menu price and no additional charge. Pre-order meal must be made before arrival at least 24 hr.

We want to make your arrival and your stay at most convenience and hassle less as much as possible.

Their reaction came after a meeting of Thai and international aviation agencies, who inspected the airport yesterday after it was blockaded for eight days from Nov 25 by the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD).

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) was satisfied with the quick resumption of services at the airport although all flight schedules had still not returned to normal, said Civil Aviation Department chief Chaisak Angsuwan.

The airport, which opened for some local and overseas flights on Thursday, was operating 450 out of a normal 700 flights a day, said airport director Serirat Prasutanond.

The United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) told the airport to impose stricter security measures especially on passengers leaving for the US with checks to see if they were carrying hazardous materials.

"The TSA commented that Suvarnabhumi airport has the best equipment, but working procedures do not match this, so officials could not make full use of it," said Mr Serirat.

The Civil Aviation Department yesterday gave a certification on airport safety to Mr Serirat to open the airport officially at 11am. Traditional dances and music as well as a show by the Joe Louis puppet troupe, entertained passengers during the opening ceremony.

Transport Minister Santi Promphat said passengers safety measures at the airport have reached 100% and all services were meeting international standards.

"United Airlines will leave [this morning] for the US. This shows the US is also confident in our safety standards," Mr Santi said.

Don Mueang airport reopened on Wednesday.

Due to the current political protest at Suvarnabhhumi International Airport, the Airports of Thailand (AOT) announced the suspension of services at Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

All THAI’s inbound and outbound flights from Suvarnabhumi International Airport are temporarily suspended until it resumes normal operations. THAI’s domestic flights, inbound and outbound from Don Mueang International Airport remain normal operation. The Thai Airways International Airport also prepared 18 flights for transporting stranded tourists to Don Muang Airport. For further information, call 02-356-1111.
